I was going through some notes today and came across this, which I wrote some
years ago when I first was in contact with the VA about obtaining some
benefits. I have lost a lot of this disillusionment since joining VVMC but
the poem does still ring true for a lot of brothers and sisters.

HELPING THE VETS

They mean well, they care
They lend a helping hand
The only trouble is
They're marching to another band.
You're supposed to know the way
To guide another through,
They tell us that it's red
When it is really blue.

We pay our taxes to the man
And he gives it to you,
There's not much left when it gets to us,
By the time all you are through.
If you knew what to do it might change a bit
But really there's not much to say,
You make it so hard to get what is ours
While you get mailed your pay.

We can say that the systems at fault
To blame it on others is easy,
To know what is wrong and not act upon it
Is bordering on the sleazy.
The band is through playing that song
The end of that tune is in sight.
You'd better start paying attention
Or be in for a helluva fight.

All our money is eaten up
By you who say you care.
You live in your big houses
While we look for clothing to wear.
